This is one of the worst floods ever seen, many cities were evacuated, half of the country may not have electricity. It has to be shown to the world, we need help.

Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia are struggling with some of the worst flooding in the history of Southeastern Europe. But if you live in the United States, you may not have any idea this is happening.

There is a flood of biblical proportions. That’s why I feel the need to point it out wherever and whenever possible, because major international media such as CNN and BBC are under-reporting of what is happening in Serbia and Bosnia. This is one of the worst floods ever seen, many cities were evacuated, half of the country may not have electricity. It has to be shown to the world, we need help.

said Novak Djokovic in his interview from the tennis tournament in Rome.

In the United States local news stations focus on stories relevant to your neighborhood and city, so it is acceptable that a crisis pertaining to a few countries thousands of miles away may not make a 30-minute program.. As I watched a news program on a major broadcast station last Friday night, I learned about the death toll at a mine in Turkey, wildfires in California and the missing Nigerian girls. While these are all stories deserving of the limelight to give focus to those who are troubled and in need, there was sadly no mention of the heaviest days of rainfall on record in Serbia.

I recently visited a few popular news websites. One gave me „top world stories“ regarding Olympic sailing, Ukraine’s election, Crimea, South Korea’s coast guard, among others, while it took me a considerable amount of time to find a news update about the flooding crisis on another. Once I did, the article’s headline related entirely to flooding effecting a power plant. It’s not until I scroll to the bottom of the article that I learn the devastation the floods have caused thus far. I wish more Americans knew how many houses and schools in Serbia have been destroyed and how many people are struggling to find drinking water.

I am trying hard to do my part to spread the news of the destruction. After asking my mother if she had heard about the floods (to which she replied, „no“), I educated her about what is going on halfway across the world in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia.

While the news media may not shed light on the humanitarian crisis, I’m using my voice to do so. So please do the same: Spread the news, open your hearts and help.
