It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy.
We all want to be happy. This is what each of us aims for at the end of the day. But did you think about what is it true happiness born out of?
According to brother David Steindl-Rast, happiness is actually born out of gratitude. How so, you might ask? What would the connection be? Many people would say:
That’s very easy. When you are happy, you are grateful.
But, think again. Is it really the happy people who are grateful?
We all know quite a number of people who have everything that it would take to be happy, and they are not happy, because they want something else or they want more of the same. And we all know people who have lots of misfortune – misfortune that we ourselves would not want to have, and they are deeply happy. They radiate happiness. You are surprised!? Why is that?
Because they are grateful.
In the midst of this great American holiday – Thanksgiving, let us all stop for one second and think, what are we grateful for in our lives?
Please share with us in the comment field below what you are grateful for, and remember:
There are many things for which we cannot be grateful, but there is no moment for which we cannot be grateful because in every moment, even difficult ones, we have the opportunity to do something.
