by , Posted on 3rd Sep 2014

After two months of renovation, two reconstructed and equipped facilities within kindergarten “Dečja radost” in Svilajnac are officially open today on September 3rd

Two kindergarten facilities within the preschool institution „Dečja radost” in Svilajnac have been completely reconstructed and equipped, and are now officially open! Once ruined because of the floods, but now as new, modern, and comfortable as it can get. The renovation of the facilities lasted less than two months, and the reconstruction costs after the floods were EUR 146,000 in total (RSD 17 million), all covered by Novak Djokovic Foundation.

We are more than happy to open these two facilities within the kindergarten. “Dečja radost” suffered the most extensive flood damage of all public facilities in this municipality. Our goal was to join our efforts and help the children from this town and surrounding villages to welcome new school year in their kindergarten. Now they can play with their friends, learn and discover new things, as they did before. Due to the reconstruction of these two facilities, nearly 250 children will be able to attend the kindergarten. Furthermore, NDF will gladly help the municipality to reconstruct the central facility within the kindergarten, as well, so that PI “Dečja radost” can be entirely renovated.

said Gorana Džudža Jakovljević, NDF project manager at the opening ceremony.

Džudža Jakovljević added the Foundation team also visited other preschool and school facilities in other areas flooded in May, in order to identify facilities in need of funds for flood damage restoration. Therefore, NDF is proud to be able to help and support kindergarten “Galeb” in Petrovac on the Mlava, opened last week, with EUR 136,000 donation. In addition, the reconstruction of kindergarten in Obrenovac, worth over half a million euro, has also started.

President of the Municipality of Svilajnac, Predrag Milanovic, said he was looking forward to further cooperation with NDF, due to exceptional professionalism, effort, efficiency and above all, willingness to help those in need shown by the whole NDF team.

On behalf of the Svilajnac Municipality I want to express my gratitude to NDF for helping and supporting us. With Novak Djokovic Foundation’s help we have completely renovated two out of three facilities of the flood damaged preschool in our town. Therefore, more than half of the children that used to attend this preschool will be able to return to the kindergarten immediately. Thus we have succeeded in solving one of the biggest problems Svilajnac was facing after the floods. In addition, we are planning to reconstruct the central kindergarten facility as well. We will do our best to make it possible for the kids to play and learn in stimulating and comfortable environment hopefully by winter months.

Zorica Djordjevic, principal of preschool institution “Dečja radost”, said that catastrophic natural disaster damaged homes and public facilities beyond recognition. However, it did not diminish hopes and dreams of children from our town and kindergarten that the things would be better, she added.

Thanks to NDF team who unselfishly engaged and helped the reconstruction and equipping of this kindergarten, kids can still dream big, laugh, play and enjoy in their childhood in our preschool institution.

Svilajnac was struck by the floods during the night between May 15th and 16th, 2014. “Dečja radost”, the only preschool institution in this town, once attended by 450 children, was severely damaged by the terrible flood wave. The entire inventory and infrastructure have been destroyed in all three facilities. Reconstruction works started as soon as the donation agreement was signed, in July. Complete renovation included new boiler room installation, masonry and bricklaying work, along with wall painting and draining all interior and exterior surfaces. Interior woodwork items were installed, while all PVC carpentry and Venetian blinds, sanitary fittings, lights and part of the roof were replaced. Construction area cleanup was organized immediately after the works were finished. The facility is fully equipped and “JRJ Moj izdavac” publishing house from Belgrade, provided numerous books for children in “Dečja radost”, thus improving their education and turning their classrooms into a more interesting place.

It’s really great that you organize “School of Life” seminars which obviously can be very helpful for teachers. Of course it’s true that we focus on children but teachers are at least as important as children, how could children learn and develop in a right way without any teacher? So I really like the idea of organizing those seminars and all those teachers who have partictaped were surely happy as well. Well done!
