The Third Schools of Life Seminar in Kraljevo
The third Schools of Life seminar “Neither black nor white – fighting against prejudice and discrimination and teaching children and young people tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism” happened in Kraljevo.
Since the new School of Life was officially opened in Sirca, near Kraljevo, NDF continued to help and support the professional development of teachers within “Schools of Life – Together for childhood” project. We hosted another seminar “Neither black nor white – fighting against prejudice and discrimination and teaching children and young people tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism” in the preschool institution “Olga Jovičić Rita” in Kraljevo in early November. This teacher training program was officially accredited (reference number 46) by CIP – Center for Interactive Pedagogy. The seminar was highly rated by 30 teachers from this preschool institution who participated in the training, with average mark 3,88 out of max 4.
The seminar was designed to empower the teachers to create a stimulating preschool environment, nurture solidarity and promote values in intercultural contexts. All children should feel accepted and respected by their teachers and peers and encouraged to reach their full potential. Specific objectives of this training were focused on helping the children develop a positive image of themselves as well as on teaching them about tolerance, respect towards individual differences and other cultures, and develop personal and group identity.
Different training methods and techniques were used in the seminar – mini-lectures, presentations, discussions, exchange of experiences, pair work, and simulations. We tried to create a positive atmosphere among the participants, and help them become active. In addition to materials that followed the topics discussed, the participants received a small collection of games (IRI games) and a set of activities they can use through workshops in their everyday teaching.
Participants were interested to share their reflections, learn from one another’s experiences and refresh their practice. In the end, they all agreed the discussions were constructive and very helpful. The seminar was implemented by CIP-Center for Interactive Pedagogy, NDF partner in the project “Schools of Life – Together for Childhood”.
