The Renovated Kindergarten Leptiric in Dimitrovgrad Officially Opened
Novak Djokovic Foundation has opened renovated kindergarten “Leptiric” in Dimitrovgrad, a town in south-east Serbia.
Today’s ribbon cut ceremony took place after months of hard work at the full reconstruction of this facility, financed by the municipality of Dimitrovgrad. The Foundation provided new, modern design furniture, toys and didactic materials for the kindergarten worth RSD 2.7 million.
“Leptiric” is one of the three facilities within the preschool institution „8. Septembar“ and is currently attended by 109 children. Prior to the reconstruction, the kindergarten was in a very bad shape – the roof was made of corrugated asbestos cement roof sheets typically used for outbuildings, warehouses and garages, there were no toilets for children, no toys and adequate furniture for the youngest.
The facility was in a very bad shape, and it negatively influenced the early development of these children. We needed to change that for better. After the equipment, the kids can enjoy, learn and play in a stimulating environment. “Leptiric” has finally become their favorite place. The Foundation will continue to help preschool children from economically disadvantaged areas and do our best to improve their early childhood education, since it gives a child a chance to return strongly to any challenge and become a winner in any field – said Maja Jovanovic, NDF project manager.
She also used the opportunity to expressed her gratitude to the municipality of Dimitrovgrad for their efforts in this significant project.
Zoran Djurov, Mayor of the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad, said that the reconstruction of kindergarten “Leptiric” became a perennial problem. Today, however, everybody who helped the reconstruction of the facility should feel proud as the outcome proved worthy of the time and efforts people invested.
Over a year ago we launched the initiative to reroof the kindergarten, since it is known that asbestos sheets may pose a health hazard. Therefore, our wish was to provide the children and their teachers safe and healthy stay in the kindergarten. The municipality has invested RSD 11.5 million for the reconstruction of this facility and works on the site were finished in June. However, we faced a very common problem: there were no funds left to purchase new toys and furniture. Novak Djokovic Foundation gladly helped us to overcome this problem, so the children are finally able to play with new toys and enjoy new, modern furniture – said Djurov.
Sonja Kamenov, director of the preschool institution „8. Septembar“ also expressed her gratitude to the project partners. She added that children’s smiles, their happiness and excitement have been the greatest gift that they could possibly receive.
The equipping of kindergarten “Leptiric” and the cooperation with the municipality of Dimitrovgrad is just one of the projects Novak Djokovic Foundation actively takes part in order to improve conditions of preschool institutions in Serbia. Promoting the importance of early childhood education we have also launched “Schools of Life – Together for Childhood” project, with the aim to open new preschool institutions and reconstruct and equip the existing ones.
