by , Posted on 31st Jan 2017

Children, their parents, and other citizens of Medosevac gathered today to wish a warm welcome to Novak Djokovic, as he came to visit the primary school “Milan Rakic” in their neighbourhood.

On this occasion Novak got informed about reconstruction and renovation works being carried out in the old school building. Transformation of the school area of 250 m2 into kindergarten is progressing well and the kindergarten will open its doors to more than 100 children 3-6 years old. In the next few months the Novak Djokovic Foundation will invest EUR 86,000 in the implementation of this significant project.

At the end of 2016 the Novak Djokovic Foundation signed the agreement with representatives of the City of Nis and the preschool institution Pcelica regarding the reconstruction of old school building and opening of modern and fully equipped kindergarten in Medosevac, a suburb located in Red Cross, one of the municipalities in the City of Nis.

It’s a great privilege for me and my foundation to be able to help those in need and support projects initiated by people willing to make great things happen in their communities. I’m glad we all share the same goal – create a safe, caring and stimulating environment for proper development and education of children and thus give them a good start in life. The fact that over 100 wonderful boys and girls will benefit from attending preschool fills my heart with happiness. Here they will learn many new things, discover their hidden talents, master valuable skills, play and enjoy with their peers, forge new friendships and have fond memories of that time. Kindergarten lays a vital foundation for later academic succes and this new facility will provide children in Medosevac and nearby places opportunity to attend high-quality preschool programs, which is extremely important for their early development – said Novak Djokovic, founder and chairman of the Novak Djokovic Foundation.

Initial NDF donation of EUR 62,000 will be invested in kindergarten interior works, such as replacing old windows and doors, plastering and painting internal walls and ceilings, installing the new floor, electrical installation works and installation of fire protection system. Therefore, the kindergarten will meet all safety and health standards required for preschool facilities. It will have three classrooms, modern preschool kitchen, nursery room for sick children, teacher’s office and bathrooms.

After the revision of project plans and further discussion, the Foundation added EUR 24,000 to the project funding for the facility exterior works. These works include facade repairing,  glazing external entrances to the builing in order to meet energy efficiency requirements and obtain energy passport for the new kindergarten, as well as installing ramps for people with disabilities at the main facility entrance.

Representatives of the City of Nis provided additional EUR 24,000 for the reconstruction of roof in the old school building.

Project in Medosevac is one of the largest from those selected under the 2015/2016 NFD Call for New Projects. The Call is open annually to project proposals aiming to provide best possible conditions for children throughout Serbia to grow up, learn and develop their potentials. New kindergarten in Medosevac brought together local community, local self-government and primary school, that offered its old builing to be used as a preschool. Their cooperation is a true example of good practice with the goal to improve the quality of life in the community.
