Thanks to the donation of the Novak Djokovic Foundation in the amount of € 97,000 the kindergarten “Zeka” officially opened its doors and welcomed nearly 70 boys and girls 3-6 years old, currently attending the facility within the preschool institution “Pcelica”.

The opening ceremony took place after the reconstruction and equipping of the area of 250 sq m in the old building of the local primary school “Milan Rakic” that has been transformed into the first kindergarten for children in Medosevac, a suburb located in Red Cross, one of the municipalities in the City of Nis.

Maja Kremic, Head of the Donation Program Department at the Novak Djokovic Foundation, said that the Foundation recognized the need of people living in Medosevac to have a preschool in their neighborhood and gladly supported community initiative to make a positive impact on the lives of these deserving children and provide them with the very best during their early years. The decision of the primary school to offer its old building to be repurposed and changed into a daycare came at the right moment.

Beside the facility reconstruction, preschool classrooms have been equipped with furniture and didactic materials and our donation also provided early educators the opportunity to improve their teaching practice and receive training from experts of the Center for Interactive Pedagogy,

added Kremic.

Authorities of the City of Nis joined the project as well and allocated additional funds for the reconstruction of old school roof, whereas the city municipality Red Cross participated in the preparation of documents needed for the project implementation.

Darko Bulatovic, Mayor of the City of Nis, highlighted the importance of this kindergarten not just for families with children but their entire community.

This project is aligned with our constant efforts to support working parents and improve the quality of life for all our citizens. We’re sure that children in Medosevac will spend many happy hours in their new kindergarten, learn lots of new things, discover their hidden talents, master valuable skills and cultivate fond memories of that time. Thank you all for being with us today and sharing our optimism regarding the implementation of similar projects in our city in the future,

said Bulatovic.

Svetlana Mitic, Director of PI “Pcelica”, expressed her gratitude to the Novak Djokovic Foundation for their professionalism, hard work and commitment to ensuring equal early educational opportunities for all children.

Our intention was to expand the network of preschools in Nis in order to give more children access to our quality child care services and early education programs. This project has solved the problem related to the lack of daycare facilities in Medosevac and we’re glad that the new kindergarten has become part of our preschool institution. None of this would have been possible without generous help and support of the NDF team and we appreciate great things they did for our children and teachers,

concluded Mitic.

Representatives of the civic association “The right step” submitted the application for project funding during the NDF’s annual Call for New Projects. Their goal was to contribute towards creating a safe, caring and stimulating environment for proper development and education of young children in Medosevac as well as raise public awareness about challenges people face in rural and suburban areas. That’s exactly what has been achieved through the implementation of this project.
