New Tennis Court Opened in Priboj

by , Posted on 3rd Nov 2014

Novak Djokovic Foundation is happy to announce that a new tennis court is completed and is officially open in Priboj today!

The clay court will enable children from Priboj and surrounding areas to enjoy one of their favorite sports and what’s more important – it will help them stay physically active. Total value of NDF’s donation is €25.000 and the court covers the area of 668m2.

Everyone had a great time at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on the tennis court, where a public group tennis lesson was organized for 50 children from the following elementary schools: “Vuk Karadžić”, “Branko Radičević”and “Desanka Maksimović”. Qualified tennis coaches, who work with children up to 10, did a great job there, and the kids were impressed with the new sport in town.

It’s worth mentioning that the first tennis tournament in Serbia was held in Priboj a long time ago, at the end of the 19th century. But, that’s history.  Unfortunately, reality is different. For decades, the children from Priboj had no tennis court, or a place to play and enjoy tennis. We decided to change things for better, so we built an outdoor tennis court in this town.

During the wonderful opening ceremony, Maja Jovanovic, NDF project manager, stated that very few tennis and sport fans know about Priboj’s sports history and its importance for tennis in our country in general. Now it’s time Priboj returned its former glory. Or at least it can give children a chance to dream and play again.

We are more than glad to open this tennis court today. Our Foundation is not only focused on helping improve children’s education, but we also seek to provide the best possible conditions for them to be physically active and engaged in sports. By playing sports, kids learn about winning and losing, they strengthen their mind and body, and it helps them grow up healthy. We hope that children in Priboj will enjoy playing and practicing tennis with their friends there. Our gratitude goes to the Municipality for helping us finish the construction of the court in a very short period of time. Now the children will be able to have their first tennis lessons here and spend more time practising sports, which is great news for the entire local community, I believe – said Mr Jovanovic at the opening ceremony.

Mr Lazar Rvovic, president of the Municipality of Priboj, expressed his deepest gratitude to Novak Djokovic and his foundation for having decided to build the tennis court in Priboj and for making a dream come true. He is satisfied because children from this town finally got a wonderful and modern court, built to the highest standards.

Novak Djokovic Foundation donation will provide the best possible conditions for children in Priboj to practice and play tennis. One day some of these kids may become great tennis players and true ambassadors of our country just like Novak, Janko, Jelena or Ana, and make all of us very proud. The municipality of Priboj will keep developing tennis infrastructure. We decided to build a “tennis house”, next to the tennis court. Furthermore, we plan to open several tennis courts in different locations – said Mr Rvovic.

According to the agreement Novak Djokovic Foundation and the Municipality of Priboj have signed, NDF provided funds for the tennis court construction, including placing the clay surface and installing tennis windscreens, lighting and court sprinkler system. The court was fully equipped with tennis net and net posts, court lines, drag mats, court benches, umpire chairs, etc. The Municipality of Priboj obtained the building permit and other necessary documents, arranged and monitored the execution of the construction work process, etc.
